The story of Thor Technologies begins long before its official founding. In the 1990s, the team behind Thor worked at Australian Protective Electronics (APE), where they pioneered spike and surge protection products that were years ahead of their time. Among their key breakthroughs were the Continuous Power Filter, Volt Guard, and Power Guard — selling over one million of these units. These products brought meaningful protection to homes and businesses during a decade when electronics were becoming increasingly vulnerable to power anomalies.

At the centre of this innovation was Willy Nelissen, a rare figure with qualifications in both electronics and electrical engineering. His career spanned railway communications and work with Grundig Germany, a leading TV manufacturer in the 1980s, before he made Australia home. Willy’s ability to bridge two engineering disciplines made him uniquely positioned to anticipate the needs of the digital age.

In September 2001, Thor Technologies was established by Nile Ausmus, Roy Stokes, and George Forster-Jones, with Willy Nelissen leading technical development. The founding team carried more than a decade of shared experience from APE, united by a vision to design products that could protect the rapidly emerging digital electronics era.

The first Thor products were the Surge Shield 8-outlet and 7-outlet boards, incorporating not only surge protection but also advanced filtration circuits. This was a visionary step at the dawn of the 2000s, when the proliferation of sensitive digital devices demanded a new level of protection against spikes, surges, and “dirty power.”

By 2003, the Surge Shield range had expanded to three models, and Thor had introduced an industrial-grade mains switchboard UPS. Within a year, the 600VA UPS became a staple, known for reliability and affordability.

In 2004, Nile’s son Sam Ausmus joined the company to drive sales in Queensland and on the East Coast. Sam would go on to dedicate 19 years to Thor before pursuing a sea change.

The year 2005 marked a major transition: Nile Ausmus sadly passed away after a short illness, and co-founder Roy Stokes retired. Leadership passed to George Forster-Jones, who assumed full management of the company. Around this time, Nick Forster-Jones returned from Africa, where he had been APE’s distributor, and joined Thor — bringing international distribution experience and continuity to the family-led business.

In 2006, Thor launched the Smart Series, designed by Rosie Newing (now Thor’s Senior Brand Strategist). This range quickly grew to include four power board models and introduced the Hardwired Series — including the 16A Smart Cavity Mount and 20A High/Low Voltage Detector (HLVD).

What truly set the Smart Series apart was the introduction of Dynamic Active Tracking (DAT) filter technology. Unlike traditional filters, which only addressed frequencies at the top and bottom of the sine wave, DAT cleaned the entire waveform, including the upward and downward curves. This groundbreaking approach delivered superior filtration — likened to noise-cancelling headphones for power.

The impact on the audiophile community was profound. Listeners reported a “blacker” sound with greater dynamic range, and Thor’s reputation grew rapidly in high-fidelity circles. At the same time, Thor’s 2kVA true online double-conversion UPS achieved a remarkable 95% sell-through rate with audio enthusiasts, who later requested a product without converting from AC to DC then back to AC, regenerating the power due to its effect onTotal Harmonic Distortion (THD). Thor responded with the Power Station, delivering pure sine wave output that preserved the THD exactly as supplied by the utility. This product became a flagship, and with its 8th generation release scheduled for 2026, it remains a cornerstone of Thor’s legacy.

After more than a decade of leadership, Willy Nelissen retired in 2016. He was succeeded by Henry Karpinski, a production engineer with the same rare dual qualifications in electronics and electrical engineering. Henry not only preserved Thor’s tradition of deep technical expertise but also improved the DAT filter technology beyond expectations.

Working closely with Professor Nihal Kularatna at Waikato University (New Zealand), Thor secured patents in Australia, New Zealand, and the US for its non-sacrificial surge protection technology. This innovation meant that surge protectors no longer needed to degrade after each strike — a revolutionary departure from the industry norm.

In 2017, Thor released the first products incorporating this patented technology: the STViQ inline protection models.

Thor’s reputation and technical leadership culminated in a landmark partnership in 2019 with Harvey Norman, Australia and New Zealand’s largest electronics retailer. This collaboration led to the design of the Apex and Alpha ranges, now comprising over a dozen models tailored to consumer needs.

These included slim inline filters for TVs and soundbars — products that resonated with modern home entertainment trends — and full-sized boards for more demanding setups. Harvey Norman also stocked the Prodigy range, Thor’s premium line featuring patented non-sacrificial surge circuits.

By 2021, Thor had expanded into dedicated data protection modules for CCTV and networking hardware, with solutions scaling up to 16 ports. As surveillance systems became mainstream, the demand for reliable protection against spikes and surges in data hardware grew significantly.

In 2022, Thor responded to a unique regional challenge. Utilities in Queensland, New South Wales, and New Zealand used Ripple Injection signals to control devices like heaters and streetlights. These signals often caused LED flickering, fan noise, and random device behaviour. Partnering with SnapOne, Thor developed the DRM1050 and DRM750 modules to neutralise Ripple Injection — once again demonstrating agility in solving real-world problems.

In 2023, Thor entered into a groundbreaking collaboration with Crestron, the global leader in commercial integration. Together, engineers developed the RF11iQP rack-mounted power distribution unit (PDU) with eight controllable ports, fully integrated into Crestron’s XiO Cloud ecosystem. Thor became the first company worldwide to deliver a PDU that could natively connect to XiO Cloud — launched to acclaim at Integrate 2025 in Sydney.

In 2024, Thor unveiled the Smartscope Noise Analyser, the result of over five years of R&D. Unlike competitor devices, which often skewed results to favour their own brand, the Smartscope was designed to be brand agnostic and 30 times more accurate than other analysers tested. It delivered live, credible samples of raw power quality, enabling electricians and integrators to demonstrate the real impact of power filtration. This product reaffirmed Thor’s leadership in both transparency and technical sophistication

Thor is poised to release the 8th generation Power Station in 2026, incorporating a complete internal redesign, new programming by Thor’s in-house developers, upgraded components, and advanced diagnostic alerts. This next evolution underscores Thor’s ongoing commitment to refining and improving products based on real customer feedback — some of whom are now third- and fourth-generation Power Station owners.
Looking ahead, Thor is investing in next-generation energy storage solutions. Current research focuses on replacing fire-prone lithium-ion batteries with a safer, lighter alternative inspired by Thor’s patented surge protection concepts. This work has potential applications across electric mobility, renewable energy, and beyond — positioning Thor once again at the forefront of disruptive innovation.
